Sea Mist House B&B offers comfortable and affordable guest accommodation in the heart of Clifden, Connemara. Our location provides easy access to the shops and sites, pubs and restaurants of Clifden, yet maintains a quiet, off-the-track atmosphere to ensure you a good night’s sleep.

We are a Fáilte Ireland approved Historical House.

We are firm believers in the tradition of Irish hospitality, in providing excellent value for money, and in making your visit to Clifden as enjoyable as possible. We welcome you happily to our home and are always open to sharing advice and recommendations for exploring the abundance of things to see & do in Connemara.

ECO-FRIENDLY

Solar panels and a wood-pellet stove meet nearly all of our heating needs, giving our guests piping hot showers as well as warm and cosy bedrooms. We use a good deal of our own garden produce, including tomatoes, vegetables and herbs, as well as free-range eggs from our own hens, to create your breakfast.

HISTORY

The house that has become Sea Mist House B&B was built in 1825, when the 13-year-old Clifden Town was a small collection of thatched-roof houses and buildings centred round the dreams of John D’Arcy to create a market town in the wilds of west Connemara. This Georgian house with stables in the back, on the national registry of protected structures, was purchased circa 1920 by P.K. Joyce, an auctioneer and the grandfather of Sheila Griffin—your hostess and the proprietor of Sea Mist House B&B.

Sea Mist House owes its modern renovations and purpose-built guest accommodations to the Christmas storm of 1998 that literally ripped the roof off the house. Sheila, her husband, Rod, and her sister, Mary, decided to transform the 19th century townhouse into a warmly inviting bed and breakfast. Their vision was to combine the friendliness of traditional décor with modern and environmentally-conscious conveniences. In August 1999, Sea Mist House B&B began welcoming guests and building the reputation for hospitality that we enjoy today.

Location

Sea Mist House B&B sits upon Sea View Street, just a 2-minute walk from the Square, Clifden Town Centre. About 20 steps out our front door, the road branches left to the Beach Road, to Clifden Quay and the Boat Club, and to the right begins the breathtaking and aptly named Sky Road, with on-foot access to the Darcy Monument and Clifden Castle.

Clifden Town, “Capital of Connemara”, sprawls across 2 drumlin hills overlooking Clifden Bay, with magnificent views of the indigo and violet-soaked Twelve Bens from nearly everywhere in town.

The city of Westport, in Co. Mayo, lies 65 km (40 miles) to the northeast of Clifden with Galway City just 81km (50 miles) to the southeast of Clifden. The newly opened M6 means Clifden, though remote in its quiet location on the very edge of Europe, is less than a 3-hour drive from Dublin.

Getting Here

Take the N59 northwest from Galway City or southwest from Westport.

From the N59, enter Clifden’s one-way traffic loop to Bridge Street, Market Street, and at the Square (obelisk metal monument in front of E.J. King’s) turn left past SuperValu and we’ll be on the right hand side, 30 metres (100ft) past the Bank of Ireland. Look for our stone façade covered in clematis vines and roses, the flowers spilling out of our garden, and the Sea Mist House sign.
